Organizing Kids' Closets: A Step-by-Step Guide

An organized closet makes mornings easier and helps you see what you have (and what you need). Here's how to get started:

Step 1: Empty Everything

Take everything out of the closet. This lets you see what you're working with and what needs to go.

Step 2: Sort and Purge

Create three piles:

  • Keep: Items that fit and are in good condition
  • Sell/Donate: Items that don't fit or aren't needed
  • Trash: Items that are damaged beyond repair

Step 3: Organize by Category

Group similar items together:

  • Tops (shirts, sweaters, hoodies)
  • Bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts)
  • Dresses and special occasion wear
  • Outerwear
  • Shoes and accessories

Step 4: Use Storage Solutions

  • Hanging organizers: For shoes and accessories
  • Bins or baskets: For smaller items
  • Shoe racks: Keep shoes organized
  • Labels: Help kids find what they need

Step 5: Make It Kid-Friendly

  • Use lower rods for younger kids
  • Keep frequently worn items at eye level
  • Use clear bins so kids can see what's inside
  • Create a "uniform" area for school clothes

Step 6: Maintain Regularly

Set aside time monthly to:

  • Remove outgrown items
  • List them on TrunkMatch
  • Reorganize as needed

An organized closet saves time and reduces stress for the whole family!
