Organizing Kids' Closets: A Step-by-Step Guide
An organized closet makes mornings easier and helps you see what you have (and what you need). Here's how to get started:
Step 1: Empty Everything
Take everything out of the closet. This lets you see what you're working with and what needs to go.
Step 2: Sort and Purge
Create three piles:
- Keep: Items that fit and are in good condition
- Sell/Donate: Items that don't fit or aren't needed
- Trash: Items that are damaged beyond repair
Step 3: Organize by Category
Group similar items together:
- Tops (shirts, sweaters, hoodies)
- Bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts)
- Dresses and special occasion wear
- Outerwear
- Shoes and accessories
Step 4: Use Storage Solutions
- Hanging organizers: For shoes and accessories
- Bins or baskets: For smaller items
- Shoe racks: Keep shoes organized
- Labels: Help kids find what they need
Step 5: Make It Kid-Friendly
- Use lower rods for younger kids
- Keep frequently worn items at eye level
- Use clear bins so kids can see what's inside
- Create a "uniform" area for school clothes
Step 6: Maintain Regularly
Set aside time monthly to:
- Remove outgrown items
- List them on TrunkMatch
- Reorganize as needed
An organized closet saves time and reduces stress for the whole family!
